This work was commissioned by the Immanuelkirche church in Hamburg-Veddel. The church had recently replaced its bells with a loudspeaker and automated playback system and had asked a number of artists to compose music to be played hourly as well as shorter sounds to be played 15, 30 and 45 minutes past the hour.

Thinking about what sounds have bell-like properties (but aren't bells) and taking into consideration the technical limitations of the bell tower's loudspeaker (mono, limited bass and high frequency), I decided to work with a limited pallet of just electric guitar and a few effects pedals (reverb, tremolo, pitch shifter, envelope).

Each piece at the full hour is "previewed" by short fragments of its component parts at the preceding 15, 30 and 45 minute mark. Some, but not all, of the pieces include a time-telling element; a melody with the same number of notes as the hour.

These pieces were played back from the bell tower of the church from 8 AM to 8 PM every day (except Mondays) during July 2021.
